News from Libya...

TRIPOLI, Libya – A cruise missile blasted Moammar Gadhafi's residential compound in an attack that carried as much symbolism as military effect, and fighter jets destroyed a line of tanks moving on the rebel capital. The U.S. said the international assault would hit any government forces attacking the opposition.

Oil prices jumped to nearly $103 a barrel Monday in Asia after the Libyan leader vowed a "long war" amid a second night of allied strikes in the OPEC nation. Jubilant rebels said they expected to bring him down in a matter of days.

It was not known where Gadhafi was when the missile hit near his iconic tent late Sunday, but it seemed to show that while the allies trade nuances over whether the Libyan leader's fall is a goal of their campaign — he is not safe.

Half of the round, three-story administration building was knocked down and pieces of the missile were scattered around, according to Associated Press photographer escorted to the scene by the Libyan government. About 300 Gadhafi supporters were in the compound at the time. It was not known if any were hurt.

Britain said Monday one of its bombing missions was aborted last night to avoid civilian casualties.

"We believe that a number of civilians had been moved within the intended target area," the Ministry of Defense said Monday. State television had said Gadhafi's supporters were converging on airports as human shields.

The U.S. military said the bombardment so far — a rain of Tomahawk cruise missiles and precision bombs from American and European aircraft, including long-range stealth B-2 bombers — had hobbled Gadhafi's air defenses. More missile strikes overnight did new damage to anti-aircraft sites, the Italian military said.

U.S., British and French planes also went after tanks headed toward Benghazi, in the opposition-held eastern half of the country. On Sunday, at least seven demolished tanks smoldered in a field 12 miles (20 kilometers) south of Benghazi, many of them with their turrets and treads blown off, alongside charred armored personnel carriers, jeeps and SUVs of the kind used by Gadhafi fighters.

"I feel like in two days max we will destroy Gadhafi," said Ezzeldin Helwani, 35, a rebel standing next to the smoldering wreckage of an armored personnel carrier, the air thick with smoke and the pungent smell of burning rubber. In a grisly sort of battle trophy, celebrating fighters hung a severed goat's head with a cigarette in its mouth from the turret of one of the gutted tanks.

The strikes that began early Sunday gave respite to Benghazi, which the day before had been under a heavy attack that killed at least 120 people. The calm highlighted the dramatic turnaround that the allied strikes bring to Libya's month-old upheaval: For the past 10 days, Gadhafi's forces had been on a triumphant offensive against the rebel-held east, driving opposition fighters back with the overwhelming firepower of tanks, artillery, warplanes and warships.

Now Gadhafi's forces are potential targets for U.S. and European strikes. The U.N. resolution authorizing international military action in Libya not only sets up a no-fly zone but allows "all necessary measures" to prevent attacks on civilians.

But the U.S. military, for now at the lead of the international campaign, is trying to walk a fine line over the end game of the assault. It is avoiding for now any appearance that it aims to take out Gadhafi or help the rebels oust him, instead limiting its stated goals to protecting civilians.

Britain also is treading carefully. Foreign Secretary William Hague refused Monday to say if Gadhafi would or could be assassinated, insisting he would not "get drawn into details about what or whom may be targeted."

"I'm not going to speculate on the targets," Hague said in a heated interview with BBC radio. "That depends on the circumstances at the time."

A military official said Air Force B-2 stealth bombers flew 25 hours in a round trip from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri and dropped 45 2,000-pound bombs.

What happens if rebel forces eventually go on the offensive against Gadhafi's troops remains unclear.

Rebels defended their support of the international intervention into Libya — apparently feeling the sting of criticism from other Libyans and Arabs who warned the country could be divided or collapse into a civil war.

"Libya will not turn into Somalia or Iraq. It will not be divided. We are battling — the Libyan people — are battling a gang of mercenaries," Mohammed al-Misrati, a rebel spokesman in the stronghold of Misrata, told Al-Jazeera on Monday.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said late Sunday that the U.S. expects turn over control of the operation to a coalition headed by France, Britain or NATO "in a matter of days," reflecting concern that the U.S. military was stretched thin by its current missions. Turkey was blocking NATO action, which requires agreement by all 28 members of the alliance.

Sunday night, heavy anti-aircraft fire erupted repeatedly in the capital, Tripoli, with arcs of red tracer bullets and exploding shells in the dark sky — marking the start of a second night of international strikes. Gadhafi supporters in the streets shot automatic weapons in the air in a show of defiance. It was not immediately known what was being targeted in the new strikes.

Libyan army spokesman Col. Milad al-Fokhi said Libyan army units had been ordered to cease fire at 9 p.m. local time, but the hour passed with no letup in military activity.

Gadhafi vowed to fight on. In a phone call to Libyan state television Sunday, he said he would not let up on Benghazi and said the government had opened up weapons depots to all Libyans, who were now armed with "automatic weapons, mortars and bombs."

"We promise you a long war," he said.

Dbanj take note..."Sandra Bullock sends $1 million for Japan". Now, learn...

From Scrapbook Photos
Actress Sandra Bullock sent a $1 million donation to the American Red Cross this week to help with earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan, the Red Cross said Thursday.

It is the largest celebrity donation to the Red Cross to be announced since the disaster struck last Friday, although the charity may have gotten large contributions that were kept confidential at the donors' request.

"This contribution is vitally important as the Red Cross works to provide critical assistance and essential relief items in this time of urgent need for so many people in Japan," the relief organization said.

The contribution was made by the Oscar-winning actress on behalf of her family, the Red Cross said.

Dozens of celebrities used their social network accounts, including Twitter, to urge fans to support the Red Cross with small donations. The group has received $2.6 million since last Friday in $10 donations sent through cell phone text messages, it said.

Overall, the American Red Cross has raised about $47 million in the United States since the earthquake and tsunami struck Japan last Friday.

The U.S. organization has passed $10 million of those donations on to the Japanese Red Cross for work on the ground in Japan, it said.

Diet Coke Wins Battle in Cola Wars

U.S. sales of Diet Coke overtook those of Pepsi-Cola for the first time in 2010, making the diet soda the No. 2 carbonated soft drink in the country behind Coca-Cola, industry data are expected to confirm Thursday.

Occupying the top two rankings would mark a historic win for Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE: KO - News) in its decades-old rivalry with PepsiCo Inc. (NYSE: PEP - News), which has seen its market share slip in recent years and is trying to retool its marketing.

The two companies have fought over the past decade to win market share from one another as cola sales overall have dropped.

Pepsi-Cola commanded only a slight lead over Diet Coke in 2009, when each brand had slightly less than a 10% market share among carbonated soft drinks. That year, regular Coke won the cola wars with a 17% market share, according to Beverage Digest, a trade publication and data service.

But market-share data to be released Thursday by Beverage Digest is expected to confirm Diet Coke pulled ahead in 2010.

The signs are there: Last month, Beverage Digest reported Pepsi-Cola's market share fell 0.5 percentage point while Diet Coke slipped just 0.1 percentage point in U.S. supermarkets, convenience stores and other retail outlets. This week's comprehensive data will also include food-service data, including restaurant fountain sales, where Coca-Cola is larger.

[More from WSJ.com: A Subway, but no McDonald's, in Tanzania]

PepsiCo made a big bet in 2010, when it didn't market its flagship cola on the Super Bowl or in other TV spots. Instead, it launched the Refresh Project, an online charitable-giving program that disbursed $20 million in donations "for refreshing ideas that change the world.''

Some industry analysts have questioned whether that program would translate into cola sales. PepsiCo says that the initiative improved its corporate profile as more than 87 million votes were cast for charitable projects, and that it will help boost revenue in the long run.

Coca-Cola has ramped up its traditional TV marketing in recent years to focus on its core brands. After a nine-year hiatus, it has advertised its flagship Coke brand during the past five Super Bowls. It has also pitched Diet Coke during the past five Academy Awards.

PepsiCo says it will continue its Refresh Project but also plans more traditional ads to try and boost Pepsi-Cola and Diet Pepsi. It plans to promote Pepsi-Cola on "X Factor," a televised music competition created by Simon Cowell to compete against "American Idol," which Coca-Cola sponsors.

[More from WSJ.com: Is Happiness Overrated?]

PepsiCo also returned to the Super Bowl this year to promote Pepsi Max, a diet cola that targets males and competes against Coke Zero, another diet cola.

Increasing the stakes, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo also spent billions of dollars last year to acquire their largest independent U.S. bottlers in a bid to bring drinks to stores more quickly.

Nigerians and the 2011 elections.

Even as we pace towards the April election period, the question of who to vote for in Lagos State isn't my worries because the man after all Lagosians heart
From Candidates
is the man I am voting for. Considering all the transformation of Oshodi, Mushin, Obalende, CMS amongst others and also the construction of major roads and drainages in Lagos together with all the other wonderful things he's been up to since his election as Governor of Lagos state in 2007. My advice to all other candidates in Lagos is to go take a rest and vote for Babatunde Fashola too. The question of who to vote for in the presidential election becomes a very big issue for me. Do I vote for Goodluck Jonathan
From Candidates
who is currently on the seat of power and hasn't been able to affect my life positively? Though Nigeria is one of the most difficult countries to rule given our vast cultural differences and multiple language system. Do I vote for Muhammadu Buhari
From Candidates
, who did quite well in the early 80's according to what i was told? Or do I vote for Nuhu Ribadu
From Candidates
, who championed the fight against corruption allowing himself to be used as a tool in the hands of the president of that time? These are the major contestants in the 2011 elections, other aspirants like Dele Momodu
From Candidates
, Pat Utomi
From Candidates
, Chris Okotie
From Candidates
amongst others should better choose to vote for one of these people instead of wasting their money and resources campaigning for nothing. The fact still remains that whoever it is God says will rule this great nation, the person it'll be whether the devil likes it or not but we as individuals have to do our part. RSVP...I believe we've all done the R(Register) part, lets complete the rest; S(Select), V(Vote) and P(Protect) so help us God. While I try to make up my mind on who to vote for, I'm saying...God bless Nigeria, God bless your hustle...See you at the polls!!!

Life and its uncertainties...

Life and its uncertainties is what it is, the "Fear of the Unknown" is what they call it. Living in a world of comfort produces mediocrity...To achieve, we've all got to step out of that box and try out that God given vision that's been a burden in our hearts for too long. WE spend our lives making money the excuse for our inability to take that risk. We hold on to time to encourage ourselves as a way of procrastinating our ability to take that decision to step out. We pray to God without having faith in his ability to direct us towards that part of progressiveness. For how long will we keep holding on to that little pay our job feeds us with? How long do we keep being afraid of the fear of having nothing to eat just because we left that job? The fear of hunger and insecurity? Maslow said this when he talked about the Hierarchy of needs.
From Mar 17, 2011
Now's the time to step out of that CAGE and put into action all your God given talents and ideas. Make that pre-calculated move today. Damn all the consequences and release yourself. Fly like an eagle. Either you die trying or succeed and be celebrated. Choose today to live as a mediocre or die while trying to succeed as a world renowned guru or be celebrated by the world as an achiever. You will achieve so long as you strive to succeed...God bless your hustle! A word to myself too...

Money or/and Women? Dooms day...

Money or/and women...Can a man pursue the two effectively? Should a man go for one after the other? Can a man do without one and have the other? Guys, it's not easy I must confess. But the truth is with money, comes women whether prostitutes, girlfriends or concubines, money bringeth them all. Seriously, man can leave without money but cannot leave without the things money can buy. But without women, man seizes to exist! It is the struggle for acknowledgment by women that brings the war between friends, empires and associates. The wisdom of priority is the problem of man. We need to learn to prioritize successfully before we can become successful as men. But still, with all the lust and craving for the sinful things of life; that figure "8" shape of that woman that lives in your neighborhood, that shapely carved lady that works in/near your office, those boobs, that ass like the mold of one of the finest porters in Wales, that sister you eye continuously in your church, that babe at that event you attended yesterday...man, what wilth life have you do? Remember the Bible rightly asked that we cut off whatever it is that would cause us to sin. Do we pluck out our eyes or do we cut off our "Middle Leg"? Note that as a man, if you can tame your eyes, you can tame that short/long/fat/thin "Middle Leg" of yours! Flee brethren and lean on to God always...May we be saved from the evil of Eve!!!

The day Chelsea embarrassed me...

A faithful day after work, got into this bar. Sitted, were 12 Chelsea dry gin hawkers waiting for the starting whistle to sound off. There went my guy who scored the first goal and there I went screaming and shouting on the top of my voice celebrating the goal with the fear of not being assaulted by the Chelsea hawkers who were deeply upset by the goal. The first half went and before I knew it, in the second half, the hawkers company replied with a goal and another goal scored through a penalty...to cut the long story short, before they blew the final whistle, I escaped from the bar with the shame of having to be booed by Chelsea dry gin hawkers and their corporate team. I wept...
